What to Bring to a Mobile Notary Appointment

A mobile notary visit usually takes 15–30 minutes—if you have everything ready. If something is missing, the appointment can stall or have to be rescheduled. Here’s the simple checklist of what to have on hand before I arrive.

1. A valid government-issued photo ID

This is non-negotiable. Virginia notaries are legally required to verify your identity with a current, unexpired photo ID. Acceptable forms include:

  • Driver’s license (Virginia or any U.S. state)
  • U.S. passport or passport card
  • State-issued ID card
  • Military ID
  • Permanent resident card

The ID must be:

  • Unexpired — even a recently-expired license will not work
  • Original — photocopies and photos of an ID are not accepted
  • A match — the name on the ID must reasonably match the name on the document

If you’ve recently changed your name and your ID hasn’t caught up yet, let me know in advance—there are options, but it’s better to plan for them than to discover the problem at the appointment.

2. The document(s)—unsigned

Bring the document you need notarized, but do not sign it before I arrive unless I’ve specifically told you it’s OK to. For most notarial acts in Virginia, you must sign in front of the notary. If you’ve already signed, we may have to print or reprint the document on the spot.

If you have multiple documents that need to be notarized, bring them all to one appointment. The travel fee is the same whether I notarize one stamp or five, so combining them saves you money.

3. Required witnesses (if applicable)

Most personal documents in Virginia—powers of attorney, basic affidavits, vehicle titles—do not require witnesses. But a few do:

  • Wills typically require two witnesses
  • Some healthcare directives require one or two witnesses
  • Certain trust documents may require witnesses

Your document (or the attorney who drafted it) will tell you. Witnesses must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have their own valid government-issued photo ID
  • Be unrelated to the signer and not named in the document (in most cases)

If you’re not sure whether your document needs witnesses, ask before booking.

4. Payment

Precisive Books accepts:

  • Cash
  • Check (made out to Precisive Books LLC)
  • Major credit/debit cards

Pricing is $35 travel fee + $10 per notarized document. I’ll confirm the total when you book, so there are no surprises.

5. A flat surface and a working pen

Pick a kitchen table, desk, or any other flat surface. Bring a working ballpoint pen (blue or black ink). If you forget, I always have spares.

6. Anyone else who needs to sign

If the document has multiple signers, everyone needs to be at the appointment with their own valid photo ID. Each signer pays the same per-stamp fee, but you only pay one travel fee.
